Kent Police Department begins registration for Spring Community Academy

The Kent Police Department is taking registrations for the Spring Community Police Academy.

Classes are on Wednesday evenings for six weeks beginning March 12, ending on April 16. Sessions are from 7 to 9 p.m., with one Saturday session on April 5 that will include optional tours of the City of Kent Corrections Center and the 911 facilities at Valley Communications Center.

After attending the first three classes, participants are eligible for a ride-along with a Kent Police officer.

Classes are at the Kent Police/Fire Training Center, 24611 116th Ave. SE, Kent.  Applications are available on the Kent Police Website at www.kentwa.gov/CommunityPoliceAcademy.

There is no cost for participating. It is open to any adult, 18 years or older, that lives, works, or has an interest in the City of Kent and its police department. Space is limited and pre-registration is required. For security reasons, all applicants must pass a background check. Persons with a felony conviction or recent misdemeanor conviction cannot be considered for participation.

The academy is delivered in a series of classes that offer straightforward, candid, information regarding daily and specialized operations of the department, while defining the agency’s role in the community.

A wide range of law enforcement topics will be discussed to include an overview of law enforcement, recruiting/testing for new officers, traffic enforcement, investigations, narcotics, gangs, community education, use of force, stress and chaplaincy, K-9, and tours of Valley Communications, Kent’s dispatch center and the Kent Jail will be available.
