Count new Kent City Councilman Jim Berrios among those recognized for life-saving efforts by Police Chief Ken Thomas.
Berrios performed CPR on a 78-year-old man who fell unconscious on Jan. 1 on the East Hill at the Golden Steer Steak ‘n Rib House.
“Jim began performing CPR until medics arrived to relieve him,” Thomas said at the Jan. 21 City Council meeting when he handed out several award certificates to residents and police officers. “Jim’s actions in conjuncture with the medic’s efforts stabilized the man and medics then transported him to the hospital. We want to thank Jim for his prompt response in helping someone in need and for saving a life.”
Berrios took his oath of office earlier at the meeting. Voters elected Berrios, who owns the Golden Steer restaurant, in November to a four-year council term.
Officers receive awards
Police officers Joel Misterek and Jason Nixon also were given life-saving awards by Thomas for their help in saving a man who had passed out Sept. 28 from a heart attack.
The man fell unconscious while riding in a car. Misterek responded to the call at a service station at James Street and Central Avenue and started CPR on the man. Nixon used an automated external defibrillator (AED) on the man to help him survive.
Two residents honored
Kristen Jordan received recognition for her help in catching a man who stole a car.
Jordan saw a suspicious vehicle Sept. 26, took photos of the vehicle and called 911 before the car left. She got the license plate number which police discovered belonged to a car stolen in Renton.
Officers were able to track down the car, took the driver into custody. Jordan identified the driver as the same man she had seen.
“It was outstanding work by one of our citizens and a great success story,” Thomas said.
Chanel Mazique received recognition for her help in nabbing two home invasion suspects.
Mazique hid in her bedroom under a bed and called 911 during an Oct.5 home invasion. She provided critical information to the dispatcher as officers responded. The suspects went into the bedroom where Mazique hid, but didn’t know she was present.
Police caught two suspects as they exited the residence.
“She stayed calm and gave detailed information that allowed us to arrest the suspects,” Thomas said.
