Kent Police are investigating at least 20 cases of fake Seattle Seahawks tickets being sold for Sunday’s game against the San Francisco 49ers at CenturyLink Field.
“There are no victims in Kent but the sales have been in Kent and Renton,” said detective Melanie Frazier during a phone interview Friday about how the Kent Police became involved in the case. “They meet at Kent Station or the Renton Walmart.”
The game, as with every game this year at CenturyLink Field, is sold out. That has opened up a market of people reselling tickets or in this case, selling fake tickets.
People are responding to an advertisement on craigslist and a few fans have found out later that the two tickets they bought are fake.
A number of the fake tickets were sold Aug. 23-24, Frazier said. Kent Police received reports of a couple of cases and then another one. Frazier contacted the Seahawks ticket office which also had received complaints. Police then started the investigation.
“They sold for $200 to $250 each,” Frazier said. “We suspect at least 20 victims. Four have come forward so far but there are other victims in other jurisdictions, including Seattle and Kennewick. All over people are buying them and they are coming to Kent to purchase them for the most part.”
Police are tracking down leads to try to find whoever is selling the fake tickets. Frazier said she couldn’t reveal too much about how they are investigating the case but she expects they will find the person or people selling the fake tickets. The arrest could be for fraud or theft charges.
“It’s a bogus ad but the tickets look like the real deal,” Frazier said. “Anybody would think they are the real deal.”
Frazier said it’s the same two seats that are being sold over and over.
“There are going to be upset people on Sunday,” Frazier said. “They’ve got a whole lot of nothing.”
