Kent Police are looking for a dull black mid-1990s Honda Civic that a witness recently spotted in the area of several vehicle break-ins.
The car is a two-door hatchback with three spoke wheels and one stock wheel, according to a Sept. 30 Kent Police e-mail.
Anyone who sees a car matching the description should not approach the vehicle or any occupants, but call 911 immediately, said Sara Wood, a Kent Police public education specialist.
The occupants of the vehicle could be part of the reason for a recent increase in the number of Kent vehicle prowls.
Wood reminds residents to always remove all valuables from vehicles and to lock the vehicle whenever it is parked.
Kent Police have seen a trend in the theft of catalytic converters, which are classified as vehicle prowls.
A thief goes under a vehicle and cuts out the converter. It can cost as more than $1,000 to fix a car after a converter is stolen, Wood said.
Drivers should park in secure areas and watch out for people looking under vehicles in parking lots. Call 911 if you see people looking under cars who don’t appear to be the owner of the vehicle.
Other police agencies in the area have reported recent thefts of gold that thieves take and then sell. The gold items include coins, necklaces and other jewelry.
Wood said people should put gold items in a secure place, such as a safe.
