Kent schools closed Wednesday, Jan. 17 due to icy roads

Kent School District already had two-hour early dismissal scheduled

The Kent School District closed schools Wednesday, Jan. 17 due to icy roads, parking lots and sidewalks, according to a district statement.

“Because it is an early release day, a two-hour delay would not allow the buses time to run their routes and then turn around and do the pick-up,” according to the district.

Neighboring districts, including Federal Way, Auburn and Renton decided on two-hour delays. In Kent, Wednesdays are a two-hour early release day.

“With our district covering over 72 square miles, we have to consider all of our geography,” according to the district statement. “Even though some (or many) of our main roads are clear, that does not mean that all of the side roads, neighborhoods, parking lots, sidewalks and walking routes are safe for our kids, families and staff.”

Details:

• All Kent School District schools closed.

• Administration Center is closed.

• There is no transportation, including out of district transportation.

• Athletics, activities, and community use of facilities scheduled for later Wednesday will be assessed by 1 p.m..This includes the School Board work session scheduled for Wednesday evening.

• All early & extended learning programs are closed.

• A.M. and P.M. preschool canceled.
