A tough economic year equals more hungry youths in Kent, but the Kent School District is there to make up the difference.
For at least 15 years, the district has sponsored and administered a United States Department of Agriculture-funded summer lunch program. This year the program is needed more than ever, said Larry McKinnis, program administrator.
“This was originally started to ensure that children in low-income areas receive at least one nutritious meal a day over the summer,” he said. “This year, we’re averaging about 250 lunches a day more than we were a years ago.”
The program brings meals to six are housing sites, six park sites in conjunction with Kent Parks and several school locations during summer school. Several years ago, the “Submarine Sandwich Bus” was added to the program, bringing meals by bus to four additional, out-of-the-way housing sites.
The meals are healthy, balanced and ethnically sensitive, McKinnis said.
Those interested in volunteering should call the district Food and Nutrition Services office at 253-373-7275.
The summer lunch program will continue through August. Meals will be made available at no charge to all attending children under 19 years of age. Meals will be provided at the following places and times:
