The city of Kent is opening its severe weather shelter for the homeless the nights of Dec. 30 through Jan. 2 at Kent Lutheran Church due to predicted dangerously low temperatures.
Check in and registration starts at 9 p.m. each evening at the church, 336 Second Ave. S., in downtown Kent. The shelter closes at 7 each morning and clients must vacate the premises.
Priority is given to homeless families with children who are living on the streets or in vehicles, but the shelter also is available for single women and men.
Staff from Catholic Community Services and volunteers from Kent Lutheran Church and the community will operate the shelter.
The National Weather Service predicts low temperatures to drop to 25 degrees Thursday and Friday nights, 28 on Saturday and 31 on Sunday. The highs are predicted to be 37 Friday, 38 Saturday and 42 on Sunday.
The days and nights are expected to be clear with no snow or rain.
