Natalie Childress, an eighth-grader at Seattle Christian School, took time away from her studies to spend the week of Jan. 27-31, participating in the Senate Page Program at the Washington State Legislature.
She was sponsored by Sen. Joe Fain (R-Auburn) of the 47th Legislative District, which includes Auburn, Kent, Covington and Renton.
Childress was one of 18 students ages 14 to 16 who took part in the program during the third week of the 2014 legislative session. Pages deliver mail, run errands, present the flag and attend “Page School” where they learn the legislative process and parliamentary procedure. Students also try their hand at drafting a bill and engage in a mock session.
“My favorite part of the experience was getting to work on the floor of the Senate chamber and meet the senators,” said the 14-year-old Childress. “I was really interested in learning about bills are passed through the Legislature.”
In her spare time, Natalie enjoys soccer, basketball, and track and is an avid reader. After high school, Natalie hopes to attend college and pursue a career in the medical field.
She is the daughter of Jack and Debora Childress of Kent.
