Fitzpatrick served as the acting city attorney for Kent from May 2013 until this summer while City Attorney Tom Brubaker filled in as the interim chief administrative officer. Brubaker and Fitzpatrick moved back to their former positions after Mayor Suzette Cooke hired Derek Matheson as CAO.

Other finalists for the Federal Way job include:

• Mark Barber, Renton senior assistant city attorney

• Jeff Capell, Tacoma deputy city attorney

• Karen Kirkpatrick, Tumwater city attorney

• Amy Jo Pearsall, Federal Way interim city attorney

The city of Federal Way is inviting the public to come meet the finalists for the city attorney position, beginning at 6 p.m., Thursday, Sept. 4 in Council Chambers at City Hall.

The city notes that “the meeting will provide residents with an opportunity to talk informally with candidates in a relaxed setting.”

According to the city, following this meeting and the internal interview process, Mayor Jim Ferrell will consider selecting a nominee to forward to the City Council for confirmation.

The city attorney position opened on May 26 after Pat Richardson retired. The city attorney provides “counsel to the mayor, council, staff and commissions and directs and coordinates comprehensive legal services for the City of Federal Way.”

The salary range for the position is $112,000 to $148,000 per year, depending on qualifications.
