To celebrate American Heart Month, students at Park Orchard Elementary School learned a fun and interactive walking routine to encourage physical activity.
Molina Healthcare sponsored the event to encourage healthy habits at a young age. More than 90 second through fourth-graders were encouraged to share what they learned with their parents and siblings to encourage healthy habits for the entire family.
Molina Healthcare also handed out gloves to the students so they can walk and play outside while keeping their hands warm.
“Heart disease is the number one killer in the U.S., but many cases are preventable,” said Roland Feltner, physician at Molina Medical Group in South Everett. “If we teach our children to adopt healthy exercise habits at a young age, we can make a real difference in their lifelong heart health.”
According to the Centers for Disease Control, the number one risk factor for having a heart attack is inactivity, so Molina Healthcare is educating students at a young age about how to keep their heart healthy with a fun walking routine.
Molina Healthcare’s mascot, Dr. Cleo, helped children do the exercises, showing them that walking can be fun. Children did variations on walking, such as walking on their toes or windmills with their arms.
