Steve Dowell is getting his day on Friday, July 11 in Kent.

Mayor Suzette Cooke proclaimed Friday as Steve Dowell Day for his longtime community service.

“I ask all Kent residents to join me in celebrating the legacy of community service provided by Steve Dowell to the residents of Kent,” Cooke said at the July 1 City Council meeting.

Dowell received the day for the following accomplishments, according to Cooke’s proclamation.

• Owner and general manager of the Dowell Company in Kent, served for the past 18 years as a member of the City’s Land Use & Planning Board and was the board’s first chairman

• Served for six years (1986-1992) as a member of the Kent City Council

• Served for a period of 16 years on the city’s Board of Adjustment prior to serving on the City Council

• A member of the Kent Chamber of Commerce for many years and served as one of its first presidents

• Instrumental in creating the Kent Rotary Club in 1958 and has been a member of the Rotary ever since, having served as its president on two separate occasions with a perfect attendance record for 56 years

• Upon graduation from Whitman College in 1948 in Walla Walla, Steve enlisted in the Marine Corps and served his country in the Korean War

• Married Jeannine, his high school sweetheart, in 1952 and together they raised three high-achieving children – one architect and two attorneys

• Has dedicated much of his adult life to serving his country as well as the Kent community, helping to make decisions that have shaped the Kent cityscape of today
