Jay Maebori, a Kentwood High School teacher, attended National Teacher Appreciation Day and a ceremony with President Obama on Tuesday, May 3 at the White House Rose Garden in Washington, D.C.
Maebori, a language arts teacher, represented the Kent School District and the teachers in the state as the 2011 Washington State Teacher of the Year. Maebori and the top teachers from 49 other states were at the event.
Obama recognized the profession and announced Michelle Shearer, an AP chemistry teacher at Urbana High School in Maryland, as the 2011 National Teacher of the Year.
Maebori can be seen in the attached video of the ceremony standing in the front row in the background between Obama’s left shoulder and Secretary of Education Arne Duncan.
