For the Reporter

A restaurant in the 25400 block of 104th Avenue Southeast was evacuated Friday evening after calls to 911 reported large plumes of black smoke coming from the strip mall business.

Firefighters from the Kent Regional Fire Authority and the Renton Fire Department were dispatched at 6:17 p.m. to the India House restaurant when they found a kitchen fire that had largely been contained by the hood and duct fire suppression system. Employees had also used several portable fire extinguishers on the fire.

The entire strip mall, which contained three large retail stores and a tavern, was evacuated as a precaution until firefighters could confirm that the fire had not spread to any other businesses. None of the other businesses was affected aside from a small amount of smoke.

There were no reports of injuries and the damage to the restaurant appears to have been limited to the kitchen area. It is unknown when the restaurant will reopen.

A Kent RFA investigator is trying to determine the cause of the fire.
