Kent Police arrested a man for investigation of fourth-degree assault after he reportedly punched another inmate in the city jail during a dispute over a sleeping mat in a holding cell.
The incident occurred at about 11:03 p.m. July 29 at the city jail, 1230 Central Ave. S., according to the police report. Jail staff called police because the inmate who was shoved wanted to press charges.
An officer’s review of video footage showed a man laying on a mat inside a holding cell when another recently booked inmate entered the cell, urinated in the latrine and then had a confrontation with the man sleeping on the mat.
The man on the mat got up to get the attention of jail staff after the other man demanded his mat. The man who took the mat then shoved the other man away from the cell door. The two were about to fight when jail staff entered the cell and separated the two men.
The man who reportedly shoved the other man denied he assaulted the man. During the investigation, the arrested man yelled profanities at the officer as well as jail staff.
