It took four Kent Police officers to handcuff a man after he reportedly refused to leave a 7-Eleven store after failing to pay for a hot dog.

The man walked into the store, 1481 W. Meeker St., at about 6:07 p.m. on Oct. 3 and asked the clerk for a hot dog, according to the police report. The clerk handed a hot dog on a bun to the man who put condiments on it and then started to eat it.

The clerk asked the man if he planned to pay for the hot dog. The man became upset and threw the hot dog on the floor.

The clerk saw a police vehicle in the parking lot, so he went outside and told the officer he wanted the man banned for life from the store. When the officer approached the man, he reportedly assumed a fighting stance with a clenched fist. The officer told him he needed to leave the property and that he had been trespassed from the store.

Three officers showed up to help the first officer. Police told the man he would be arrested for trespassing if he didn’t leave. The man refused to leave and then ignored commands to put his hands behind his back. An officer grabbed each arm but the man tensed up and resisted. Four officers then took him to the ground and placed him in handcuffs.

The man refused to walk to the patrol vehicle, so officers carried him. He then began to spit in the backseat of the vehicle, so officers put a spit mask over his face.

Police arrested the man for investigation of resisting arrest and criminal trespass.

Man speeds through town

Officers arrested a man for investigation of reckless driving after he drove nearly 50 mph in a 25 mph zone while speeding away from the 24-hours Walgreens store at about 1:20 a.m. on Oct. 4 near the 25600 block of 104th Avenue Southeast.

An officer saw a Honda Civic speed out of the store parking lot and he saw people wave and point at the vehicle, according to the police report. The officer pursued the car northbound on 109th Avenue Southeast. The driver reportedly turned off the car’s lights and hit speeds of about 50 mph driving along the street between two apartment complexes.

The officer pulled the driver over in an apartment parking lot. The driver told the officer he was scared so he didn’t pull over right away. A woman passenger in the car told police that they had gone to Walgreens to get a pregnancy test. She said they didn’t have the money to buy it so she placed it in her bag before changing her mind and putting it back on the shelf.

The woman also told police she and her boyfriend were addicted to heroin and had smoked it about two hours earlier.

Store employees told police that the woman had placed several items in a plastic bag and when they approached her she dropped the bag and fled the store. Officers arrested the woman for a Kent shoplifting warrant.

Man flees from officers

Police arrested a man for investigation of obstructing an officer after he refused commands to stop when officers responded to a report of a man trying to open apartment doors at about 11:49 a.m. on Oct. 2 at the Ventana Apartments near the 1400 block of West Smith Street.

Officers saw the man walking down stairs at the apartment and asked him to stop but he started to run away, according to the police report. A second officer saw the man running down steps and told him to stop but the man kept running. The officer fired a Taser, striking the man with two darts. The man dropped to the ground and officers handcuffed him.

Police searched the man and found an empty tube of a plastic pen inside his pants pocket. The tube was melted and had residue in it. The officer noted the device is known as a tooter and used to smoke narcotics, so they also arrested the man for investigation of possession of drug paraphernalia.

Woman on the run

Officers arrested a woman for a Des Moines warrant for failing to appear for a harassment charge after they responded to a reported dispute between the woman and a man inside a vehicle at the Goodwill store parking lot, 23313 Pacific Highway South.

Store employees called 911 after they said a man had punched a woman inside a vehicle at about 5:51 p.m. on Oct. 2, according to the police report.

The man told police he decided they didn’t need to buy anything at the store so he returned to the pickup and told his fiancee to leave. But she didn’t want to go and reportedly threw a can of soup or soda on the man. The woman had no visible injuries and didn’t claim any injuries so officers didn’t arrest the man.

Store employees asked police to ban the couple for life from Goodwill because of the disturbance. If either returns to the store, they could be arrested for trespassing.
