Renton Police filed papers Thursday to recommend that the King County Prosecuting Attorney’s Office file first-degree assault and reckless endangerment charges against a 63-year-old Kent man who was shot and injured March 30 by Kent Police.

Prosecutors will decide whether to file charges against the man.

The man remained in critical condition Thursday at Harborview Medical Center in Seattle, according to a Renton Police media release.

Renton detectives are investigating the case because Kent officers were involved in the shooting. The agencies have a regional agreement to investigate police shootings of a neighboring jurisdiction.

Kent officers were called to The Lakes neighborhood in the 23300 block of 61st Avenue South at about 10:08 p.m. March 30 after reports of an illegal discharge of a weapon. They found a man with a gun at the Bayview Townhomes.

According to police reports, the man, when confronted by police, pointed a weapon at officers, who then fired shots that struck the man. Neither officer was injured.

Both officers, a 29-year-old who has been with Kent for three years, and a 27-year-old who has been with Kent one year, have been placed on administrative leave, according to Lt. Pat Lowery, Kent Police spokesman. Lowery said it is a routine practice when an officer shoots someone to be placed on leave during the investigation.
