Kent Police Target Crime is this year’s theme for the 28th annual National Night Out, a highly effective crime and drug prevention event sponsored by the National Association of Town Watch.
This year’s National Night Out is Tuesday, Aug. 2. Kent has more than 100 events and festivities scheduled in local neighborhoods and communities, and anticipates reaching more than 18,000 Kent residents, according to a Kent Police media release.
National Night Out is an opportunity to bring your neighbors together and get to know each other a little better. It can also be a great time to revitalize and update your Neighborhood Watch.
It is estimated that national attendance will bring more than 37 million people together, representing more than 15,000 communities from all 50 states, U.S. territories, Canada, as well as military bases throughout the U.S. and around the world.
Kent has a long and proud history of participation with National Night Out. The city was recognized last year for demonstrating the 16th highest rate of participation for similar-sized cities. Kent had 103 National Night Out events in 2010.
Local events will include potlucks, barbecues, dessert socials, and informal gatherings to bring communities together while heightening crime awareness, strengthening neighborhood spirit, and sending a message to criminals that neighborhoods are fighting back.
More than 90 visitors from the city of Kent will visit the different events. Dignitaries will include City Council members, Kent firefighters and police officers, as well as other city employees.
Events have been scheduled from 5-9 p.m. Joining this year’s dignitaries will be representatives from Target, a sponsor of National Night Out across America.
