Kent Police arrested a man for investigation of disorderly conduct after he reportedly called a 6-year-old African-American boy a "monkey," and threw a rock at the child as he walked past the man's home.

Kent Police arrested a man for investigation of disorderly conduct after he reportedly called a 6-year-old African-American boy a “monkey,” and threw a rock at the child as he walked past the man’s home.

When officers arrived at about 6:44 p.m. on April 4 to the house in the 2900 block of South 256th Street, they found about 10 people, mostly African-Americans, gathered outside the man’s West Hill home, according to the police report.

A grandmother reported she had walked past the man’s place with three young grandchildren and the man yelled from his porch, “I don’t know what to call you people, gooks or monkeys.”

The grandmother and mother of the children confronted the man a bit later and he continued to use racial slurs.

The man told police he threw a rock at a dog to keep it out of his yard. He denied using any racist terms. He said he asked them if they spoke English or Spanish. An officer noted the man seemed to be clearly intoxicated as he talked to police.

Officers recognized the man from other calls to the house, including a noise complaint about loud music. The man told police he turned the music up loud so he could hear it as he mowed his lawn. Officers also had responded to a domestic dispute call at the home.

Screwdriver attack in van

Officers arrested a man for investigation of fourth-degree assault and harassment after he allegedly attacked his girlfriend with a screwdriver while parked in a van at about 9:08 a.m. on April 4 in the Safeway parking lot, 20830 108th Ave. S.E.

The woman fled from the van into the store and asked employees to call 911, according to the police report.

The girlfriend told police the man had been smoking meth and drinking alcohol the previous three days and wouldn’t let her leave the van where they had been staying. He threatened to kill her and tried to stab her with a screwdriver. He also slapped her in the face.

Officers found the man at a nearby Jack in the Box. He admitted to using meth and drinking alcohol and that he hadn’t taken his bipolar medication. He said he had an argument with his girlfriend but he denied slapping her or attacking her with a screwdriver.

Police searched the van and found puncture holes in a mattress. The woman told officers he had put puncture marks in the mattress. Officers also found a six-inch screwdriver.

When officers tried to talk further with the man, he responded, “No, I was told not to talk to you guys.”

Assault at restaurant

Police arrested a man for investigation of fourth-degree assault after he allegedly punched another man twice in the face inside a restroom at the Denny’s restaurant, 1246 Central Ave. N.

The incident occurred at about 4:27 a.m. on April 5. The attack reportedly was unprovoked, according to the police report.

A man told police he went to use the restroom and because another man was at the urinal, he used the stall. He said when he turned around the man stood behind him and punched him in the face. The man fled the restroom and told the manager about the incident.

Officers talked to the man who threw the punches and he told them he had been drinking but didn’t say anything about punching the man. The officer noticed a strong odor of intoxicating beverages while talking to the man.

Bedroom fight

Officers arrested a man for investigation of fourth-degree assault and third-degree malicious mischief after he allegedly slapped or punched his wife and punched a hole in a bedroom door on April 3 at a home in the 24600 block of 131st Place Southeast.

The wife had a scratch on her nose and a rug burn on her knee but wouldn’t talk to officers about how she got injured, according to the police report.

When officers showed up at the home, the husband tried to stop them from talking to his wife. He said they had been out drinking at a casino and they took a cab home when they started to argue. He said his wife is the jealous type. He admitted to punching a hole in the door but denied causing any injuries to his wife.

Theft by housemate

Police arrested a woman for investigation of third-degree theft after she reportedly took several personal items from a man she shares a home with in the 23400 block of 119th Avenue Southeast.

The house reportedly used to be a clean and sober home for recovering alcohol and drug addicts but apparently the owner lost the contract to operate the home as a recovery center, according to the police report.

Police noted they have had several calls to the home and all involved intoxicated subjects.

A man reported the woman had stolen several items, including a hair dryer, prescription medication, flat iron and costume jewelry from his room. A witness saw the woman go in and out of the room when the man was gone.

Officers found a bag with the items that the woman denied belonged to her.

“I didn’t steal anything so I’m not saying anything,” the woman told police.
