Kent Fire Department personnel were dispatched shortly after 6 p.m. this evening to a residential fire in the 10600 block of Southeast 236th Street on Kent’s East Hill.

On arrival the first engine company found the garage fully engulfed in smoke and flames. Three engine companies, one ladder company and one aid car were quickly able to get the fire under control. The fire was originally called into dispatch by a family member.

An injury was sustained by a family member who attempted to extinguish the fire. The individual was evaluated on location and transported to a local hospital for further care. It is anticipated that the individual will make a full recovery. No other injuries were sustained by the family or by firefighting crews.

Red Cross is assisting the family with temporary housing, food and clothing. The family’s  Labrador retriever was found lifeless in the structure by initial attack crews.

The home is considered to be a total loss with early damage estimates to be in excess of $220,000. The home sustained heavy smoke and flame damage to the garage and kitchen areas. The remainder of the home sustained very significant heat and smoke damage. Investigators have determined that the cause of the fire to be accidental.

The department stated the most important step you can take to protect yourself in your home is to having working smoke detectors installed. Smoke detectors have saved thousands of lives and have prevented many more injuries.
