For the Reporter
Starting this summer, the King County Road Services Division is planning to make several safety improvements to a section of Southeast Covington Sawyer Road, which connects the Lake Sawyer community with Highway 18 near Covington and Kent.
A project open house is planned 5-7 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 25, at the Grass Lake Elementary School Library, 28700 191st Place, Kent.
To help reduce collisions on this stretch of road, the county will:
• add a two-way left-turn lane from 179th Avenue Southeast to 181st Avenue Southeast;
• realign the intersection with 179th Avenue Southeast;
• create paved shoulders; and
• install lighting and guardrail in certain places
An online project map shows the improvements planned for the area. State Environmental Policy Act (SEPA) review information is on the project website and comments will be accepted through 4:30 p.m. March 6.
The road will remain open during construction, but users should expect delays due to lane closures during non-commute hours. When one lane is closed, flaggers will help maintain a consistent flow of traffic.
Crews will post advance warning signs 10 days before construction begins this summer.
