The Lucy Lopez Center will offer coats and other winter items for free from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, or until supplies last.

Lunch brings warm feelings, warm clothing

A community lunch to talk about the plight of the homeless last week netted more than 1,000 articles of winter clothing for Kent’s neediest citizens. That was the word from Sally Goodgion, organizer of the Kent Kiwanis Club’s “Hope for Families 2010,” a fundraising lunch Dec. 9 that asked audience members to each contribute warm winter clothing as part of their admission.

The Green River levees and the Howard Hanson Dam had no trouble this past weekend handling the deluge of the winter’s first major Pineapple Express weather system. The cities of Kent, Auburn, Tukwila and Renton escaped any major Green River flooding despite the more than 2 inches of rain that fell Sunday.

WRESTLING: New look at Kent-Meridian

The pillars of the Kent-Meridian High wrestling program graduated last spring. Jesus Valdez, Nick Lemmon, Andrew Smith and Thomas Reinhart — four of the South Puget Sound League North Division’s top wrestlers last season — have moved on. “You have four outstanding kids. They were so exceptional, natural leaders,” said Kent-Meridian coach Todd Owens.

With storm over, flood cleanup around King County begins

Now that the rain is gone, road crews are turning their attention to the massive cleanup that lies ahead. Kent couple who try to help homeless couple wind up robbed at knifepoint

A Kent couple who tried to help a homeless man and woman by taking them in during the winter holidays reportedly were robbed in their own home early Monday morning. Kent Police were called to the couple’s downtown Kent apartment at about 2:20 a.m. The couple told police that their guests, a 25-year-old man and 23-year-old woman, used a knife to threaten and rob them.
