POLICE BLOTTER: Man arrested for punching girlfriend

Assault

Kent Police arrested a 25-year-old man for investigation of provoking assault, obstructing justice and resisting arrest in connection with a fight with a 34-year-old man at about 8:52 p.m. July 9 at Lake Meridian Park.

Officers were on foot patrol at the park when they heard people yelling “Fight! Fight!” according to the police report.

The older man told police that two men accused him of stealing a gold chain from one of the men’s younger brothers and threatened to beat him up.

A 24-year-old man told officers he came to the park with the 25-year-old man because his brother told him someone had stolen his gold chain at that location and he came to stick up for his brother.

Police arrested the 24-year-old man for investigation of fourth-degree assault and obstructing justice. He tried to get away from an officer as they walked toward a patrol car. Two other officers assisted the officer in order to get the man to the car.

Drugs

Police arrested a 22-year-old woman for investigation of possession of marijuana July 7 in the 1200 block of Central Avenue South after a security officer checked her purse at the entrance to the Kent Municipal Court and saw a green leafy substance inside a plastic bag.

The security officer told police he found a black case inside the purse that had the green leafy material, according to the police report.

The material tested positive for marijuana. The woman admitted to police that the marijuana belonged to her.

“I should have smoked one last bowl before I came to court today,” the woman said to officers.

Police noted in the report that “smoking a bowl” refers to smoking marijuana. The report did not indicate the reason the woman was scheduled to appear in court.

Disturbing the peace

Police arrested a 30-year-old man for fourth-degree assault, disorderly conduct, obstructing justice and third-degree malicious mischief after an incident at about 6 p.m. July 9 near South 259th Street and Central Avenue South.

An officer in a patrol car spotted a man crossing the street and causing traffic to brake rapidly to avoid hitting him, according to the police report.

When the officer got out of his car to talk to the man and asked him to stop, the man kept walking. When the officer grabbed the man’s arm, the man tensed up and tried to pull away before the officer forced him to the ground and handcuffed him.

The officer discovered that the man was deaf and asked for assistance from any officers who knew American Sign Language, but none of those officers were available.

The man started to write a note on a pad but then threw the pad to the ground. While in the back of the patrol car, the man began to kick the doors and windows and caused damage to one of the rear doors.

At the city jail, the man refused to get out of the car and started to kick and swing at officers. It took three jail guards and two police officers to get the man to a cell.

Assault

Police arrested a 22-year-old man for investigation of fourth-degree assault after he reportedly punched his girlfriend in the back of the head in a dispute at about 7:43 p.m. July 8 in the 9500 block of South 248th Street.

The woman told officers that they argued about her cell phone and that her boyfriend then broke the cell phone and punched her in the head, according to the police report.

The couple has lived together for about two years. They have a 16-month-old child together.
