The wait is finally over. On Jan. 31, Washingtonians have their first opportunity to play Powerball, the multi-state draw game offering jackpots that at times have reached up to $365 million!
Until now, Washington’s Lottery has just offered one multi-state draw game, Mega Millions, which has been in operation since 2002. Starting Sunday, players now will have four chances each week to win large jackpots from Mega Millions and Powerball, which start at $12 million and $20 million, respectively and grow each time the jackpot isn’t hit.
“Washington’s Lottery is very pleased to have this popular game in our portfolio. One dollar buys a player the opportunity to dream big, very big.” said Washington Lottery Director Chris Liu. “Powerball can offer the kind of jackpots that are more than just life-changing; they can be world-changing.”
Powerball is a large jackpot game. Tickets are $1 each and may be purchased at any of the nearly 4,000 retailers across Washington where Lottery products are already being offered. Drawings take place every Wednesday and Saturday night at 7:59 p.m. Five white balls are drawn out of a drum with 59 white balls, and one red ball, the Powerball, is drawn out of a drum with 39 red balls.
Washington is one of several states that require legislation to sell both multi-state games. In April 2009, Washington’s Lottery was granted the ability to offer both games following the final passage of Engrossed Substitute Senate Bill 6108. In October 2009, the Multi-State Lottery Association, the organization that controls Powerball, reached an agreement that would allow states to cross-sell Mega Millions and Powerball in all U.S. Lottery Jurisdictions as early as January 2010. Once the game is fully established after several years, Powerball is expected to generate roughly $30 million annually in ticket sales.
