The city of Kent Public Safety Committee has scheduled a special meeting at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday, July 27 to discuss the shooting of 12 people at a car show on the West Hill of Kent.

The meeting will be at City Hall, 220 4th Avenue South, in the City Council Chambers.

The Kent Police believe the shooting to be a gang-related crime. Officers are investigating the incident and initial reports are two shooters may have been involved.

None of the injuries were life threatening.

City Councilman Ron Harmon, who is the chair of the Public Safety Committee said he called the special meeting to inform the citizens of Kent about the actions being taken by the city and police officials regarding the shooting.

The incident occurred at a lowrider car show at La Plaza strip mall, 23311 Pacific Highway S.

“Chief (Ken) Thomas will give us an update,” Harmon said. “We plan to bring about a pro-active approach to this issue. It is both a local and regional problem that must be dealt with accordingly. I think it is so important the city government reaches out to the community to let them know what has happened based on an ongoing investigation.”

Harmon said the city must let citizens know “what’s going on and what we are going to do about it.”
