The Rotary Club of Kent recently honored the top 5 percent of the graduating class of each of the four high schools (Kent Meridian, Kentridge, Kentwood and Kentlake) and two academies (Kent Mountain View and Kent Phoenix) in the Kent School District.
Nearly 200 people attended the May 22 celebration in the Lindbloom Student Center at Green River Community College. King County Sheriff Steve Strachan, the outgoing president of the Rotary Club of Kent, was host.
Kent School District Superintendent Edward Lee Vargas, who is also a member of the club, handed out certificates to each of the nearly 100 students who attended.
In addition to recognizing the students and their families and hearing from eight different student speakers, $21,000 in scholarships were awarded to nine different students based on their community service, financial need, academics, future plans and unique needs.
