Kent resident Lindsey Shumway filed to run for the District 47, Position No. 2, House seat held by Rep. Pat Sullivan, D-Covington.
Shumway, born and raised in the area, is a mother of three and a lifelong conservative who thinks voters are ready for a change in the House.
“Every other day there is some new and creative tax for us to pay,” said Shumway in a media release. “I decided to run when I saw my car tab renewal fee. Enough is enough.”
Shumway spent her career in publishing and advertising before staying home to focus on her family. She runs a private health coaching practice and volunteers in the community as a Kent Parks soccer coach and Kent School District art docent chairperson. She served as the HOA president of her neighborhood for two years.
Her highest priority is reigning in spending in Olympia.
“People in this district are fed up with taxes, the recent failed attempt to raise utility taxes in Kent completely proves my point,” said Shumway. “We respect police and want to support the city leaders, but we’re tapped out.”
With children of her own, Shumway is taking an active role in finding solutions for Kent School District challenges.
“I attended the recent Kent School District community conversations,” Shumway said. “I’m hopeful about the future of the district, but feel a deep sense of disappointment in the current state of affairs. Mothers in Kent are giving up hope. I feel compelled to stand up and speak out for the needs of our children and teachers.”

The primary election is Aug. 7 and the general election Nov. 6. Republican Ted Cooke also is running for the seat. The two candidates with the most votes in August advance to the general election.
