Sound Transit to close portion of State Route 99 this weekend

All lanes between S. 204th Street and S. 208th Street closed Friday night to Sunday night; detours available.

All lanes of Pacific Highway South between S. 204th Street and S. 208th Street will be closed this weekend as crews work on Sound Transit’s Federal Way Link Extension project.

Crews will be working to complete and open a new bypass route. Pacific Highway South (also known as State Route 99) will be closed from 8 p.m. Friday, Jan. 15, through 8 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 17.

A detour will route northbound drivers around the closure by heading west on S. 208th Street, north on 24th Avenue South, and east on S. 200th Street back to Pacific Highway South.

Drivers traveling south will head west on S. 200th Street, south on 26th Avenue South, and east on S. 208th Street back to Pacific Highway South.

Sound Transit is building this temporary bypass in order to construct the elevated light rail guideway and will be in place through fall 2022, according to Sound Transit. Later this year, Sound Transit is set to also begin work on a bridge over Pacific Highway South as part of the Washington Department of Transportation’s State Route 509 project.

The Sound Transit work is weather dependent.

Sound Transit plans to open the Federal Way Link Extension for service in 2024. For more information on the Federal Way Link Extension and to sign up for project updates, visit soundtransit.org/fwlink.
