The trial for a Tukwila man accused of shooting a man to death in November 2008 at the Westfield Southcenter Mall has been rescheduled to Jan. 19, 2011 at King County Superior Court in Kent.
Prosecutors have charged Barry Lee Saunders with second-degree murder and first-degree assault. The trial had been scheduled to start July 22, according to the King County Prosecuting Attorney’s Office.
Defense attorneys asked for more time to finish interviews with witnesses and attorneys from both sides agreed with the January date, said Dan Donohoe, spokesman for the Prosecuting Attorney’s Office.
Saunders, 23, is charged with second-degree murder for the shooting death of a 17-year-old Seattle boy. He also is charged with first-degree assault against a 15-year-old boy who was wounded by a gunshot. Saunders pleaded not guilty to the charges in December 2008.
Saunders remains in custody at the Norm Maleng Regional Justice Center. Bail is set at $1 million.
The shooting apparently stemmed from an altercation in the mall involving several individuals from two distinct groups, according to charging papers.
