The Washington State Department of Transportation invites the public to a hearing and open house on Tuesday, Feb. 23, to review and comment on its environmental analysis of the SR 520 floating bridge and west-side interchange designs.

The analysis, called a supplemental draft environmental impact statement (SDEIS), reviewed three designs for the freeway interchange in the Montlake area, as well as the effects of building a new six-lane SR 520 floating bridge and roadway from I-5 to Medina. Details are online and will be available at a hearing and open house, where WSDOT staff will answer questions and receive and record public comments.

Environmental hearing and open house

Time: 5 – 7 p.m.

Date: Tuesday, Feb. 23

Location: Lake Union Park Naval Reserve Building, 860 Terry Ave. N., Seattle.

WSDOT has extended the comment period on the SDEIS to April 15. WSDOT will consider comments from the public before identifying a preferred Montlake interchange design this spring. A final environmental impact statement is scheduled to be released in about a year, an important and required step before seeking construction permits.

The Washington State Legislature has endorsed a six-lane replacement for the corridor, which includes two general-purpose lanes and one transit/HOV lane in each direction. A new floating bridge is scheduled to open for drivers in 2014. The governor and Legislature established a total project budget of $4.65 billion.
