Two members of the same Kent family were arrested for DUI in King County within one hour of each other on April 3, according to the Washington State Patrol.
At 12:34 a.m., a 25-year-old Kent man arrived at northbound Interstate 405 at State Route 169 where he had been called by a friend who needed a “sober” driver to pick up his car after he had been arrested for suspicion of DUI. When the driver arrived to pick up the car, he was arrested by the State Patrol for suspicion of DUI.
The same morning at 1:34 a.m., a Dodge was stopped on southbound I-5 at the Boeing Access Road. The driver, a 29-year-old Kent man, was arrested for suspicion of DUI and third-degree driving while his license was suspended. The driver stated he was supposed to be the designated driver.
Troopers later observed that although the exact relationship of the drivers was unknown, the two arrested men shared the same last name and Kent home address.
The Washington State Patrol reminds all drivers to make alternate arrangements when drinking. The designated driver is not the driver who has had the least to drink. Helping a friend to avoid having his car towed doesn’t work if your car gets towed as well.
Drivers placed under arrest often say they did not realize they were affected by alcohol when they got in the driver’s seat. Avoiding driving any time there may be impairment is the safest choice.
