For the Reporter

The Seattle Thunderbirds came back from three one-goal deficits Friday night at the Moda Center in Portland to beat the Portland Winterhawks 4-3 in a shootout.

The T-Birds were down by a goal in all three periods. They battled back to get the tying goal with 2:17 left in the third period to send the game to overtime.

In overtime each team had several chances but Seattle goalie Taran Kozun and Portland goalie Brendan Burke made the saves when called upon.

Portland shot first in the shootout and sent out Dominic Turgeon first. Turgeon beat Kozun to put Portland in front. Seattle sent out Mathew Barzal and he beat Burke to tie the shootout 1-1.

Oliver Bjorkstrand, Portland’s second shooter, was denied by Kozun at the left post. Keegan Kolesar, Seattle’s second shooter, was stopped by Burke when he made a move in close.

Miles Koules came up third for Portland and Kozun made the save. With a chance to win the game Seattle sent up rookie Donovan Neuls as their third shooter. Neuls collected the puck at center ice. Neuls skated down the ice with his head up and wired a hard wrist shot over Burke’s glove for the winning goal.

This was the first shootout of the year for both the T-Birds and Winterhawks.

The T-Birds face the Kelowna Rockets at 7:05 p.m. Saturday at the ShoWare Center.
