Parents of students at Kent-Meridian High School had the option to keep their kids home on Thursday after a report Wednesday of a potential threat to the school. Officials ruled the threat “not credible.”

Principal Wade Barringer posted the following statement on the school’s website:

“A report of a potential threat to Kent-Meridian was made Wednesday, Oct. 29. Based on our thorough investigation, staff and students were told that at this point, the threat is not credible. However, in abundance of caution and based on the unique sensitivity with regard to recent events at other school districts, it was determined that we should increase our usual strong security presence with local law enforcement and additional KSD Safety officers on campus.

We wanted to let you know that should you choose to keep your child out of school Thursday because of your own concerns, we will respect that decision and the absence will be excused.

We will continue to monitor the situation and keep you informed.

As your principal, I want you to know that your child’s safety is my number one concern and tomorrow (Thursday), I am looking forward to day of calm and safe learning at our Kent-Meridian High School.”

Tensions at schools are high because of the shooting deaths last week at Marysville-Pilchuk High School. Federal Way High School went into lockdown Thursday because of an alleged threat made by a student.
