King County Sheriff deputies were called to Northwood Middle School Dec. 9 after a 12-year-old boy reportedly scratched three other students on their arms with a razor blade.
According to police, the injuries were minor and the victims, two 12-year-old boys and a 13-year-old girl, were treated with adhesive bandages by the school nurse and returned to class.
The boy was released to his mother.
According to Northwood Principal Colleen Nelson, the boy had a single-edged razor blade and the incident was not a violent one. It is not known where he got the razor blade.
“This was not an attack,” Nelson said.
Nelson said the victims were acquaintances of the boy, who was “significantly disciplined,” including a suspension.
In a letter sent home Wednesday, Nelson asked parents to talk with their students about the importance of school safety and of not minimizing issues such a razor blade in school, something she reiterated in an interview Friday.
“In order to create a safe school we need all students, parents and staff to be vigilant,” she said.
The case was forwarded to the King County Prosecutor’s Office to determine if any charges would be brought against the boy.
