Mathew Barzal and Keegan Kolesar each had a goal and assist to lead the Seattle Thunderbirds to a 3-1 win over the Victoria Royals at Save-On-Foods Memorial Arena in Victoria, British Columbia, on Saturday night.

This was the second of back-to-back games in Victoria. The T-Birds defeated the Royals 4-2 Friday night.

The game was a penalty-filled affair as the T-Birds killed off eight of nine Victoria power plays. The T-Birds had six power plays, including two five-on-three power plays.

Logan Flodell started in net and had 21 saves to get his record to 8-3-1-0. Flodell got the win Friday night against Victoria.

The T-Birds and Royals traded five-on-three power play goals just over three minutes apart in the first period to head to the first intermission tied 1-1.

Victoria (14-7-0-1) took a 1-0 lead when Matt Phillips scored at 6:10 of the first. Phillips took a pass from Joe Hicketts in the low left circle and hesitated before taking a quick shot that beat Seattle goalie Logan Flodell on the short side.

A Victoria tripping penalty followed by a delay of game penalty gave Seattle (12-6-1-0) a two-man advantage for 1:54. Ethan Bear moved the puck to Barzal who carried the puck into the Royals zone with speed on the right side. Barzal crossed the puck to Kolesar at the bottom of the left circle. The big right wing snapped Barzal’s pass past Victoria goalie Griffen Outhouse as the goalie lunged over to try and make the save. Kolesar’s goal at 9:15 of the period gave him a three-game goal streak.

The T-Birds struck for two goals in 14 seconds to take a 3-1 lead. Kolesar sent the puck to from the right boards to Turner Ottenbreit at center ice inside the blue line. Ottenbreit was challenged by the Victoria defense and quickly moved to the puck to Barzal in the left circle. Barzal one-timed Ottenbreit’s pass and beat Outhouse at the 15-minute mark.

Off the ensuing face-off the T-Birds got the puck deep in the Victoria zone. Alexander True dug the puck out of the left corner and got it to Nick Holowko on the left boards. Holowko held the puck while True headed to the front of the net. Holowko wristed the puck from the left boards at the Victoria net. The shot found the back of the net at 15:14 of the period.

Seattle outshot Victoria 11-6 in the second period and led 17-16 in total shots after two periods.

Outhouse’s record goes to 2-1-0-0 after he made 30 saves.
