Kent Police continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding a tragic traffic collision that took the life of a pedestrian in the roadway.

Kent Police and Fire personnel were sent to the 23400 block of Pacific Highway South at 6:07 Saturday evening after a family crossing the busy roadway were struck by a passing vehicle.

The incident started when a family attempted to cross Pacific Highway south of the Kent Des Moines Road intersection.  As the family made their way across the lanes of travel, they crossed into the path of a southbound vehicle. The vehicle was unable to avoid the collision, striking the father and throwing the young teen pedestrian to the ground. The impact also sent another family member to the ground.

Paramedics worked to revive the pedestrian but were unsuccessful.

The 13-year-old girl was pronounced dead at the scene. The father and other family member were treated for non-life threatening injuries and transported to a nearby hospital. The names and condition of the family members are not being released at this time.

Kent Police traffic investigators closed two lanes of Pacific Highway South to conducti their investigation. The driver of the vehicle is cooperating with investigators.

“The conditions of this tragic collision were made worse because the collision occurred within sight of a fully marked and controlled crosswalk,”said Kent Police Commander Jarod Kasner.
