For the Reporter
Firefighters from several local fire departments responded to a two-alarm apartment fire in the 17800 block of 32 Avenue South Wednesday night.
The fire, which was first reported at 11:07 p.m., damaged two apartments and forced the evacuation of several more. All of the residents were able to escape safely and there were no reports of injuries.
The initial response to the incident was increased due to the concern of people possibly being trapped by the fire. Flames were visible from several blocks away and reports to 911 were made from throughout the area.
When firefighters from the Kent Fire Department RFA arrived on scene, they found smoke and flames coming from a second-story apartment. Fire had also spread to a second unit. In total, four units were damaged. After fighting the fire from the outside to knock down the flames, crews entered the affected apartments and extinguished the fires. Searches of the apartments confirmed that everyone had escaped safely.
The fire investigator is currently working to determine the cause of the fire.
Red Cross was requested to assist the four families, totaling seven adults. The apartment complex’s management is working to provide apartments for those displaced by the fire.
In addition to the Kent Fire Department RFA, firefighters from South King Fire and Rescue, the Tukwila Fire Department, the Renton Fire Department, and the Burien Fire Department also responded.
According to the apartment manager, there are working smoke and carbon monoxide alarms in all apartments.
