A 37 year old Kent man has been arrested following a two hour standoff in Kent. The incident started when officers were called to a disturbance at 11013 SE 256 Pl, the Meridian Ridge Apartments.

Kent Police responded to the complex in east Kent at 9:53 a.m. after neighbors reported sounds of a fight from inside the apartment. Officers arrived within minutes to find a partially clothed woman running from the apartment.

It was determined that she had been held against her will inside the apartment for several hours. During that time she was assaulted by the suspect who she identified as her boyfriend. She also revealed that the suspects’ sister was still inside the residence.

As officers continued to investigate the incident they learned the man was a convicted felon with several warrants for his arrest, and a history of violence.

Initial efforts to coax the suspect and his sister outside were unsuccessful. Several attempts were made to start a dialogue but all went unanswered. Tactical officers and hostage negotiators were summoned to the scene and deployed when police concerns turned to the wellbeing of the woman still inside.

At noon the sister safely emerged from the apartment and confirmed that her brother was still inside. Minutes later, the 37-year-old man responded to officers calls and surrendered without incident.

“Today’s situation was resolved in a textbook manner” Kent Police Lieutenant Pat Lowery said. “We’re very happy that everyone emerged from this incident unharmed, and that interruption to the neighborhood was minimized”.

The suspect is currently being held in the city of Kent Corrections Center on a variety of domestic violence related charges. It is anticipated that he will be formally charged with those crimes on Monday.
