Two Kent women who attend Washington State University were injured in a single-vehicle accident that killed another student Saturday on an icy Interstate 90 about 17 miles east of Ellensburg.
Leah E. Baird, 19, of Kent, was driving a 2003 Ford Escape at about 10:40 a.m. Saturday westbound on I-90 when the sports utility vehicle went out of control on the icy road, left the roadway, rolled over and ended up its side, according to a Washington State Patrol media release.
Alex D. Shiley, of Kent, was one of four passengers in the SUV. Both Baird and Shiley were treated and released at Kittitas Valley Community Hospital in Ellensburg, said a hospital spokeswoman.
Austin M. Scott, 18, of Lake Forest Park, died at the scene of the accident, according to the State Patrol.
Susan L. Cannarella, 20, of Poulsbo, and Weson A. Osborne, 18, of Omak, also were injured in the accident. Osborne was transported to Kittitas Valley Hospital and later to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle.
Scott and Osborne were not wearing seat belts, according to the State Patrol. The other three in the vehicle wore seat belts.
State Patrol officials listed speed too fast for conditions as the cause of the accident. No drugs or alcohol were involved in the accident. Any potential charges in connection with the accident remained under investigation.
The man who died as well as the other four in the vehicle were all students at Washington State, according to The Daily Evergreen.
