Two people were able to safely escape after their house caught fire early Thursday morning in the 22800 block of 135th Avenue Southeast on Kent’s East Hill.
The resident reported the fire to 911 at 2:15 a.m. after smelling smoke. When firefighters from the Kent Regional Fire Authority arrived, they found half of the shake-style roof on fire and a portion of it collapsing, according to a Kent RFA media release.
It took more than 20 minutes to control the fire, which had spread through the entire attic space.
A fire investigator determined that the fire started after sparks from the fireplace chimney landed on the dry wood roof.
