For the Reporter
Sometimes it’s best just to toss an outfit that has been around for a few decades and go for something new. That’s almost what is going to happen on State Route 181 in Tukwila.
The popular route to and from stores and businesses in the Southcenter shopping mall area is getting a fresh look.
Beginning Sunday, May 3, contractor crews working for the Washington State Department of Transportation begin grinding and repaving SR 181 (West Valley Highway) between South 180th Street and Southcenter Boulevard as part of a $2.3 million pavement-preservation project.
“We’re going to remove a mile and a half of old, cracked roadway and put down a new layer of pavement,” said WSDOT Project Engineer Aleta Borschowa. “In addition, we’re going to fix a corner of the Longacres Way intersection that has been sinking over the years.”
Crews from Tucci & Sons must remove the top 1.5 inches of existing pavement, repair the roadbed underneath as needed and then repave the road. Earlier this spring, they began improving seven pedestrian ramps on SR 181 to create safer highway crossings.
Work on the project is scheduled for completion in fall 2015.
