WGU Washington – the locally-based affiliate of online, nonprofit Western Governors University (WGU) – has moved its headquarters from downtown Seattle to Kent.

WGU Washington relocated to Kent to better reflect the university’s principles of access, quality and value, according to a school news release Monday. Kent is home to more than 4,500 businesses and approximately 78,000 jobs, and the city’s $8 billion gross business income is the highest among its peer cities in South King County.

“We’re very happy to now base our offices in Kent,” said WGU Washington’s Chancellor Jean Floten. “We greatly appreciated our nearly five years in Seattle, a period in which our university experienced significant growth. Now, as we look forward to the next five years and beyond, I’m confident we’ll get the support we need from our new community.”

WGU Washington is celebrating five years since the state’s leadership established the university. In recognition of WGU Washington’s milestone, Gov. Inslee signed a proclamation declaring April 16-23 WGU Washington Week throughout the state. That period of celebration includes April 22, the anniversary of the day in 2011 on which then-Gov. Christine Gregoire signed into law the bill creating WGU Washington.

Since 2011, WGU Washington’s enrollment has increased to more than 9,200 full-time students. There are currently 152 students enrolled in WGU Washington who live in Kent.
