Strong winds caused power outages and the closure of six Kent School District schools on Wednesday, Dec. 18.
The city of Kent Public Works Department also closed a few roads due to fallen trees and power lines.
The school district closed Soos Creek, Sunrise, Glenridge and Springbrook elementary schools and later closed Meeker and Northwood middle schools, according to the district’s website and Facebook page. The schools are on the East Hill portion of the district.
“We apologize for the late notice,” the district posted about the elementary school closures.
Meeker and Northwood middle schools were closed after students had arrived for classes. District buses were sent back to the schools to pick up students.
“Kent School District late calls like this when school has already started, creates chaos and confusion,” one parent posted on Facebook. “Staff, students, parents frantically trying to make decisions. Northwood was a mess picking up students. These discussions need to be made in a more timely manner so everyone remains safe.”
District staff responded to the post.
“Thank you for your comment and please know our inclement weather team will be doing a thorough after-action review of this situation,” according to the district. “We work hard to make the very best decisions in a timely manner for our students, staff and families and we understand the impact these decisions have on families. We apologize for any inconvenience or negative impact to our students, staff, families, and our community.”
Road closures
The city of Kent Public Works Department closed the southbound lane of 108th Avenue SE at the South 277th Street off ramp for a fallen tree. Northbound lanes were still accessible.
Full road closure occurred on 208th Avenue SE between 116th Avenue SE and 124th Avenue Se for a fallen tree and power lines across the road.
Full road closure also occurred on 108th Avenue SE between SE 279th Street and SE 280th Street for a fallen tree.
PSE response
Puget Sound Energy (PSE) reported that restoration efforts were underway after damaging winds knocked out power in certain parts of King, Pierce and Thurston counties.
“Our crews are working hard to assess damage and restore power as quickly and safely as possible,” according to PSE.
PSE reminded people to never touch or go near downed power lines because they may be energized. Report problems to 1-888-225-5773 or 911.
“We know it’s tough to be without power, especially during the holiday season,” according to PSE. “Our crews are working around the clock to get the lights back on. Thank you for your patience and understanding.”
