World Refugee Day to be honored locally at Kent and Renton libraries

In honor of World Refugee Day 2011 there will be a series of free one-hour cultural orientations at the Kent Library and the Renton Library. The orientations offer people working with refugees an opportunity to learn about diverse cultures of the newly resettled community members. Key phrases of the languages will be taught enabling refugees a warmer more encouraging welcome to the community.

In honor of World Refugee Day 2011 there will be a series of free one-hour cultural orientations at the Kent Library and the Renton Library.

The orientations offer people working with refugees an opportunity to learn about diverse cultures of the newly resettled community members. Key phrases of the languages will be taught enabling refugees a warmer more encouraging welcome to the community.

The Kent Library lectures are scheduled from 2-3 p.m. Saturday, June 11, 1-2 p.m. Sunday June 12 and 3-4 p.m. Sunday.

The Saturday lecture will feature Mona Han, director of the Coalition for Refugees from Burma.

The Sunday lecturer from 1-2 p.m. will be Hem Acharya, youth advocate and interpreter, featuring Bhutan

The second Sunday speaker will be Baidaa Weli, Jewish Family Service featuring Iraq.

The Kent Library is located at 212 2nd Ave. N.

The series continues at the Renton Library, 100 Mill Avenue S from 11 a.m. to noon, Saturday, June 18 featuring Faten Rashid, Sea-Tac International Airport, employment, and the orientation centers on Iraq, and from 2-3 p.m. June 18 the speaker will be Mohamed Robale, Seattle Public Schools, centering on Somalia.

The orientations are sponsored by the King County Library and the Refugee and Immigrant Children’s Program of Lutheran Community Services Northwest with the Language Bank of the American Red Cross, the Coalition for refugees from Burma, Jewish Family Services and Seattle Public Schools.
