Wrong-way driver on I-5 off ramp near Kent faces assault, DUI charges

Friday night, Oct. 4 crash near South 272nd Street injures two

A wrong-way driver injured himself, and the driver of another vehicle, on the South 272nd Street off ramp from northbound Interstate 5 near the borders of Kent and Federal Way.

The Washington State Patrol arrested a 58-year-old Milton man for investigation of assault and driving under the influence (DUI) after responding to the crash at about 9:31 p.m. Friday, Oct. 4, according to a State Patrol press memo.

The vehicle entered the wrong way onto northbound I-5 from the eastbound South 272nd Street off ramp, according to the State Patrol. Three vehicles were driving in lane one northbound I-5 exiting to South 272nd Street. The vehicle going the wrong way reportedly struck all three vehicles prior to leaving the roadway, rolling over and coming to rest in the ditch on its top.

The other three vehicles came to rest fully blocking the off ramp for 3 hours and 57 minutes.

Paramedics transported the Milton man and the driver of one other vehicle, a 22-year-old Federal Way man, to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle, according to the State Patrol. Both of their vehicles were totaled. Nobody else was injured. The other two vehicles had reportable damage.
