Man, 66, dies in Renton crash

Police say it appears the man had a medical episode; officers identify stolen vehicle backed up in traffic

A 66-year-old man died in a fatal traffic collision on March 21 in Renton.

Additionally, Renton Police reportedly identified a stolen vehicle in the backed up traffic as a result of the collision, and detained three teenagers.

“While we were investigating the traffic collision where the victim passed away, an officer came across a stolen vehicle occupied by three teenagers,” said Sandra Havlik, a spokesperson for the Renton Police Department.

Renton officers were initially dispatched to Logan Avenue North and Airport Way at 3:24 p.m. March 21 to a single vehicle collision, according to Havlik.

Upon arrival at the scene, first responders confirmed the driver as deceased and the sole occupant of the vehicle.

According to Havlik, early indicators pointed that the driver likely experienced a medical episode on southbound Logan Avenue North in the middle of driving, crossed the street at the corner with Airport Way, and crashed into a tree at the southwest corner.

As of March 22, no reports from the King County Medical Examiner have identified a manner and cause of death.

A responding officer at the scene of the collision reportedly identified a stolen vehicle, a blue Hyundai Elantra, sitting in the backed up traffic on Logan Avenue North, and detained the occupants within the vehicle until backup officers arrived.

The occupants complied with police, according to Havlik.

Police booked the 18-year-old driver into jail, and released the two passengers, a 16-year-old girl and 15-year-old boy, to guardians with charges to be determined, according to Havlik.
