Man dragged, shot, killed in Renton after holding onto car during theft

Police report there are at least two suspects who have not yet been identified.

A man was dragged as he grabbed onto his car that was being stolen before he was then shot and killed in Renton.

The Renton Police Department is seeking assistance from the public with a homicide investigation. RPD reported on Feb. 1 that at about 3:25 a.m., in the 1100 block of South 27th Place, the 35-year-old victim approached a suspect who was leaving in his vehicle. Police report that the victim grabbed the driver’s side window, and the suspect dragged him, then shot him once as he fled in the victim’s vehicle.

RPD said at least five cars were prowled before the homicide, and at least two suspects were armed and dangerous — but there could be more suspects. RPD spokesperson Meeghan Black said when the crime occurred, it was pitch black, so they couldn’t tell the gender of the suspects or their description.

Police reported that later in the morning at 11:15 a.m. Feb. 1, the suspects’ original vehicle — which was a stolen vehicle — was found at Cascade Park, and the victim’s vehicle was found at 16302 132nd Place SE.

RPD said the unoccupied cars would be brought to the station and processed for evidence.

“Investigators are taking dozens of leads. They processed seven vehicles over the weekend for evidence and fingerprints,” Black said. “We are asking folks near the area where the vehicles were located to check their surveillance cameras for possible images of the vehicles.”

Black said the suspects’ route was south on Benson Road from South 27th Place, east on SE 168th Street, north on 128th Avenue SE, east on SE 164th Street, and north on 132nd Place SE. Police are looking for footage from 3:15 a.m. through 7:30 a.m. on Feb 1, Black said.

RPD asked that people who live around 1100 S. 27th Place and had their car prowled overnight on Feb. 1 to contact Sgt. Judd at bjudd@rentonwa.gov, regardless of whether belongings were taken.

“We urge people not to approach a suspect for a crime in progress. Call 911 and be a good witness,” Black said. “Get descriptions and only if safe, record the incident.”
