Irene Luella Mathena
Irene Luella Mathena, beloved wife, mother, grandmother, aunt, friend, died October 11, 2009, at her home in Kent, WA. She was 91. Irene was born October 8, 1918 in Lemmon, South Dakota. She attended Augustana College in Sioux Falls, South Dakota; two years later Irene met and married Thomas J. Mathena (deceased) after just ten weeks courtship. They shared 42 years of marriage and had four children.Never one to sit idle, Irene enjoyed gardening, was a never ending student, a world traveler and never missed a canning season. She loved the Mariners, crosswords and had perfected a chocolate cake recipe. She will be missed.Irene is survived by her two sons (Art, Mel), 16 grandchildren and 28 great grandchildren. A memorial service and celebration of her life will be held at Lutheran Church of the Cross, Saturday October 17, 10 am. In lieu of flowers, please make donations to either Lutheran Church of the Cross or Susan G. Komen Foundation.
