On behalf of the City of Kent, I’d like to extend a huge THANK YOU to the Kent Lions Club for another fantastic Cornucopia Days Festival. Cornucopia Days is the largest family festival in South King County and is organized and run entirely by volunteers! Plus, proceeds from the festival benefit more than 250 non-profit and charitable organizations in our area!
A community event of this size, with such a variety of activities at different locations, is a year-long planning process.
In addition to the street fair, carnival and parade, Lions’ members oversaw Miss Cornucopia Scholarship activities, Dragon Boat races, in-line and skateboard competitions, soccer tournament, a theater stage production, Friday night square dance, BINGO, Jaguar Football bowl game, Kent Farmer’s Market, and, with the City’s cultural arts program, the children’s hands-on art activities, poetry readings and a rich variety of visual and performing-arts events.
While more than 100 community volunteers and numerous city staff from parks, fire, public works and media assisted the Lions Club, I’d like to give special recognition to our Kent police, Explorer Scouts and Volunteers in Police Service (VIPS). Their alert professionalism helped keep Cornucopia Days a safe, family-friendly event.
It was wonderful to hear tourists and past residents rave about the festival and how beautiful and hip Kent is looking. The new Town Square Plaza Park with its fountains and floating Rotary sphere, was a popular gathering spot for all ages to cool off in the 80-plus-degree heat.
Thank you, thank you, thank you Kent Lions. You are a great asset to Kent.
