Hello. My name is Calvin J. Watts and I am honored to serve as superintendent of our Kent School District. I would like to thank the Kent Reporter for the opportunity to share monthly updates on our district, as well as issues and trends in education that may impact our schools.
When it comes to the education of our children we know everyone agrees – we all want every student receiving a high quality, world-class education in the Kent School District.
So often in this unusual presidential debate we have come across apologetic endorsements. People who support Trump or Hillary but only to avoid endorsing the other candidate or because "their" candidate did not win their party nomination.
Donald Trump is the best choice for president.
Choice is a dubious notion to begin with. Most Americans feel their choices are becoming slimmer.
I read today that the Maple Valley City Council has approved recreational marijuana shops in Maple Valley while the Kent City Council still sits on its ban.
We are a society and community diverse in background, ideas, race and culture.
A super PAC supporting Democratic Gov. Jay Inslee has redirected hundreds of thousands of dollars from the governor's race into getting more Democrats elected to the Legislature.
I must say that I don't have a clue what bill Roni Strupat is referring to. They claim that I have my facts wrong. I think it is the other way around.
Roni Strupat facts were wrong again in a letter on Sept. 30 about the Zika funding bill the U.S. House manipulated and passed in June.
I've recently come to understand that the upcoming election is not about Trump or Clinton as a Republican or Democratic choice. The majority of uninformed citizens just want a change and Trump is the new shiny thing that entertains them with his brutish, hateful, nasty persona.
On Nov. 8, we have an opportunity to vote for improvements in our schools and community without raising taxes. I'm voting in favor of the Kent School District bond for several reasons.
"I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings". "To Kill a Mockingbird". "Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone" …
"The Devil is Always in the Details" (Sept. 2, Kent Reporter) – an important sentiment to keep in mind as November approaches this election year. I am sure Ms. Gill's intention was to look out for the well being of her community. Unfortunately, she failed to get her facts right about I-732.
The Kent Downtown Partnership recently hosted its first golf tournament. Much to our surprise, it was a huge success. It was only a surprise because we had not hosted one before.
I see that Hillary refers to Trump supporters as a "basket full of deplorables." This reminds me of an old story.
On Sept. 2, Roni Strupat wrote in stating that Dave Reichert does "right" and supports Zika funding. Unfortunately, the writer fails to mention that the bill that Reichert supports contains many other provisions stuffed into the bill by House Republicans that have nothing to do with Zika funding.
I hope the Legislature was able to figure out how much to spend for books and transportation without having to hire too many "professionals."
Guess who was among the first to welcome our Olympic athletes back home from Rio? None other than the IRS.
Last month Sgt. Scott Rankin, Det. Melanie Robinson, officer John Waldo and I attended the memorials for the fallen Dallas officers.
