Seattle Thunderbirds defenseman Shea Theodore signed a three-year-entry level contract Tuesday with the Anaheim Ducks.
Theodore was selected by the Ducks in the first round, 26th overall, in the 2013 NHL Draft. No financial terms of the deal were released.
“Very exciting day, I’m proud and honored to sign with the Anaheim Ducks,” Theodore said on his Twitter account. “Thanks to everyone who has helped me along the way.”
Theodore has appeared in three preseason games for Anaheim, collecting one assist. The 6 foot, 1-inch, 183-pound defenseman led all Anaheim skaters in time-on-ice on Sept. 22 against Colorado, logging 22 minutes. Theodore made his Anaheim debut in the club’s first preseason game, earning an assist in the 6-2 win over Phoenix on Sept. 16 at Honda Center.
He is still part of Anaheim’s preseason roster but is expected to be sent to the team’s American Hockey League (AHL) affiliate in Norfolk, Va.
Last season, Theodore had 50 points on 19 goals and 31 assists in 71 games for the T-Birds in the Western Hockey League. He played in all seven playoff games against the Kelowna Rockets in the first round and had two assists.
Theodore was a member of Team Canada that won the gold medal at the U-18 World Championships held in Sochi, Russia, from April 16-28. He also was a member of the gold medal winning Team Canada team at the 2012 Memorial of Ivan Hlinka tournament in the Czech Republic and Slovakia.
